There's a classic episode of The Little Rascals where one of the gang can't join everybody else on the ballfield because he has to stay home with his younger brother, who has the croup. "I can't come out and play," he whines. "I've got to stay home and grease Wheezer!" Nobody at Geffen Records knows whether this was the inspiration in naming Weezer, but it makes sense. Like many of their peers, the members of the Los Angeles quartet seem to have spent their formative years in front of the TV; when they were a little older, they were just as entranced by college rock. Finally, ala the Rascals, one of the gang said, "Hey, kids, let's put on a show!," and the result is Weezer's uplifting, unpretentious, and extremely endearing debut.

The self-titled Weezer is lean and mean at 10 short, punchy tunes, but nearly every one is powered by a larger-than-life chorus or a simple but effective lyric. "Undone-The Sweater Song" uses an unraveling sweater as a metaphor for a relationship on the rocks; "Buddy Holly" pays heartfelt tribute to the '50s rocker, and "In the Garage" paints a scene of suburban teens jamming while surrounded by posters of Kiss. Producer Ric Ocasek of Cars fame pushes the vocals and rhythm guitars, and this bare-bones approach may earn comparisons to fellow garage-pop band Green Day. But Weezer has more in common with the late, lamented Big Dipper, another group of slacker wiseguys that you just had to love. --Jim DeRogatis

5 out of 5 stars best of the best   July 17, 2010
joshuastar (tallahassee, fl)
this is what happens when you spend time writing songs you care about, instead of searching for the perfect "pop formula."

this album gets better in hindsight, and remains a favorite.

this and Pinkerton are crucial for any roadtrip.

5 out of 5 stars permant resident of my discman   May 22, 2010

This is my 2nd time puchasing this cd. I am glad I doubld-dipped. Onto the disc. There is no one song that I dislike, but track 10 outstays its welcome by clocking in at 8 min. Even though I haven't listened to this disc in over a decade, it brings back memories of my adolence. The tracks that are on my mp3 list are #1, #2, and #8.

5 out of 5 stars Cool!   March 31, 2010
Veil_Lord (San Jose, CA)
If you haven't heard of Weezer before, this is a good CD to start with. While they're not the most popular band out there, they have a decent following and they aren't exactly unknown either. The songs are I guess considered punk, but they're more like the pop or rock you'd hear on an average radio station. I've seen them in concert twice putting on a realy great show. Their songs have a good beat and/or are funny or amusing. It's one band my wife and I can agree on when we're driving in the car. They're really talented and I fully enjoyed this purchase. If you like this one too, be sure to check out their Green and Pink albums.

5 out of 5 stars Weezer (Blue Album)   February 5, 2010
Bjorn Viberg (European Union)
Weezer (Blue Album) being Weezer's debut album and 1994 release and was a massive hit among the critics and a top ten hit in Switzerland and New Zealand. The best three tracks are "Undone - the sweater song", "Buddy Holly" and "Say it aint so". Allmusic and Rolling Stone both the album favourable reviews. The sound of this debut album is a mix of alternative rock and power pop. 5/5.
