Editorial Reviews:

Album Description
Victory at Sea make sound that is as morose as it is beautiful, as stunning as it is depressive. The tools they rely on are simple: an electric guitar, a bass guitar, drums. Mining deep psychic strata, the trio skillfully exposes raw nerve to dim light, knowing when to musically tiptoe into trauma as well as how to break through with ferocity.

Carousel is as succinct a statement as Victory at Sea has ever made. In this music-as-commerce world it can sound almost too real. If you haven't already fallen victim to the twin sirens of derivative song and rock gloss, you may find Carousel utterly seductive, in turn warming and chilling in its depths.

5 out of 5 stars Those of you looking for The Dark is Just the Night...   September 29, 2005

Victory at Sea aren't initially addictive. You have to open yourself to their style, and then they will transform you. In fact, each one of their albums are different, and takes time to understand them. It's something I appreciate in an artist, because it's something that many are afraid to do. However, their albums maintain a similar feel with Mona's vocals. She has a lower, awkward voice, almost haunting. This album has a very distinct feel. It feels empty. It lacks something, yet it lacks nothing. Victory at Sea are able to achieve a solid, continuous sound with little movement; enigmatic would be the best word to use here. Despite this mystery, there's a tremendous accomplishment to produce an album where every track carries over into the next, yet leaving you guessing on what's going to happen. "On the Surface of the Sea" is perhaps the best track here, because it's ominous and uplifting all in a period of a few minutes. It begins with oddly beautiful crafted notes floating inbetween bizarre beats from Christina Files, but evolves smoothly. It also connects the first half and the second half of the album, and provides an excellent lead into "Submarine". Highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars ...   March 6, 2004
I first heard Victory at Sea while driving at 3 in the morning under smoke stacks. Beautifully melodic and melancholy, your average take on music is twisted into something genuine and magnified to a higher state of heavenly. They make it easy to fall under the spell of intricate detail folded around guitars, drums, and a siren's sound.

4 out of 5 stars Stripped Down & Edgy Indie Rock Music   January 23, 2002
I bought this album after seeing Victory at Sea's live performance, and was not let down. Their music is honest and edgy, yet surprisingly catchy ,especially the tracks "Bloodline" and "Blizzard of '79". Overall, its more on the mellow side, but their are definate moments of rocking outness. Fin Moore's drumming is amazing, and his energy really drives this album. I definately think it is worth giving a listen too.
