Ah, youth: the exuberance, the energy, the blistering highs and bottomless depths. It's an ideal breeding ground for true rock & roll belief. Hence, the youngsters of Paramore unearth geysers of loud, sugary angst on Riot!, their major label debut and follow-up to 2005's All We Know Is Falling. Small-town musicians who have played together for years, Paramore boasts the appeal of an emo-pop blast developed out of savvy songwriting and musicianship. The sweet spot the band hits--somewhere between Avril Lavigne and All-American Rejects--comes naturally. Lead singer Hayley Williams, barely 18, has big-time vocal depth and genuine charisma besides, and while her singing can sound a little contrived, she delivers with such end-of-the-world conviction that it's an easy flaw to forgive. Bright and catchy melodies abound, but songs like "Misery Business" and "Miracle" also feature razor-sharp cadences and ultra-clean transitions. Too clean, actually. The production is crystal clear, which accentuates the stumbles (mostly on the ballads) and robs these whippersnappers of the messy highs they surely achieve playing live. But some things can't be entirely glossed over, and while the more aged among us will sip our Scotch and make fun of their adolescent shenanigans, we'll also be surreptitiously listening on our iPods after we put the kids to bed. --Matthew Cooke

I really like this CD. It's got both alt-rock and pop, and is very "listenable".

This is my absolute favorite Paramore album. If you are only getting one, this is the one to get. My favorite song is "That's what you get".

This album is definitely full of energy (even the "slow ballad" We Are Broken has energy to it) and it's easy to see why the band decided to name it Riot. The entire album is basically a huge riot against love, high school drama, and corporations. It's definitely a bit of a different feel from All We Know Is Falling, especially in terms of the energy in the music, and I absolutely recommend buying this album.

5 out of 5 stars Paramore ROCKS!!!   July 6, 2010

Okay number one I'm 21yrs old and I love Paramore. All those haters that are giving Paramore bad reviews are old people(50+) who think that the Beatles are still alive or think that Prince is a good artist(Prince totally sucks).
This is now, stop trying to compare old farts who can't sing anymore if their lives depended on it(such as the Eagles who are nowhere near as good as they used to be)

Okay the Eagles were only good thirty years ago. As for one of those people that think that I'd be ashamed to say I listen to Paramore ten years from now, I will never be ashamed, I'd be more ashamed if I never even heard of the powerhouse known as Paramore. Sex Pistols, okay if they really were that great, they would still be a band, or at least would have more than a few albums(I do like them though).

If you want to know a really time tested band listen to R.E.M. they are definitely one of the best bands in this century. Anyway, I can't tell you how many times I've loved listening to Paramore at the end of my shift at work, just listening to their upbeat jams and powerful songs helps keep me awake and always puts a BIG smile on my face. Okay they don't have the best lyrics in the world but who cares, they FRIGGIN ROCK. When was the last time a band with a female lead singer rocked this hard?

Avril Lavigne doesn't count, she's a solo artist. Flyleaf is the only band I know of apart from Paramore with a pint sized female powerhouse. There really are not a whole lot of bands like Paramore, I don't get where those old people think that they've heard this kind of music before. You just can't put Paramore in the same group as Fall Out Boy, MCR, and Evanescence. Paramore is very unique, and if there is one amazing thing about them, it's their music videos! In a time when music videos lately are among the most horrid P.O.S.(due to the stupid rap videos on MTV that only feature half naked women and neon lights) Paramore comes through with some really amazing music videos(Or at least their producers).

Brick by Boring Brick is one of the best music videos I've ever seen, it sticks very close to the meaning of the song and adds a nice Alice in Wonderland kind of touch to the music world that you just do not see these days.

4 out of 5 stars More Paramore   April 11, 2010

It is a difficult choice, but I would have to pick "Riot!" as the best of the first three albums from Paramore. "All We Know" is a strong debut, but it has some weaker points, and "Brand New Eyes" has several of what I feel are their best songs, but it doesn't maintain such a high-level of quality on all of its tracks. This is a very impressive album, all the more so when one considers that it is only their second. It was released on June 12, 2007.

"For a Pessimist I'm Pretty Optimistic" opens the album with a strong number, but not one which would be released as a single. As with most of the songs on this album it is fairly basic, but has a good driving feel to it. "That's What You Get" is the next piece and is one of the four singles from the album. This is followed by another single "Hallelujah" which is similar in lyric content, though this time instead of heading towards a break-up this one is about seeing things through and staying together. "Misery Business" is another of the singles from the album, and another song about relationships, though this one is about fighting over a man. "When it Rains" is another break-up song, but at least this one has a significantly different feel then those which came before.

"Let the Flames Begin" is the bridge song between the first and second half of the album. This one isn't a relationship song, but instead seems to be about finding oneself. "Miracle" moves back to the area of relationship pieces, and is probably the weakest song on the album, though that is not difficult given the quality of the rest of the tracks. "Crushcrushcrush" is the next piece and the remaining single from the album. This one rings in a different aspect to the other relationship songs on the album. "We Are Broken" is next, and while one could put this in the category of relationship songs, it seems to be more about faith. "Fences" also moves away from the relationship pieces as it is about dealing with living one's life in the public eye. "Born for this" is a bit less obvious, but seems to be about struggling to make it.

If one wants to look for negatives, one can pick on "Miracle", the number of relationship songs, and perhaps a lack of diversity in sound, but when a group finds a sound that works for them it is perhaps too much to ask for them to abandon it. This is only their second studio album, they still have time to stretch and grow as a group. The positives far outweigh the negatives as this album is full of energy and lyrics that you want to sing-along with. Paramore on this album was Hayley Williams (vocals), Josh Farro (guitars), Zac Farro (drums), Jeremy Davis (bass). Hayley Williams and Josh Farro are the main songwriters, with one piece co-written with Zac Farro, one with future member Taylor York, and two with producer David Bendeth.
