Editorial Reviews:

It's hard to follow up the record that made you famous. For many artists, that's their first album, and the disappointing results are termed the "sophomore slump." Luckily, Tegan and Sara's star-making Juno-nominated album, So Jealous, was their fourth--and their fifth album, The Con, not only avoids any kind of slump but sets a new bar of quality quite high. While both a darker and quirkier album than the near-perfect heartbreak pop of So Jealous, The Con skillfully packs its instant hooks in so tight, virtually every line becomes the one you want to sing along to--and the twins' lyrics aren't your typical pop pabulum. Layer upon layer of tasty ear candy coat considered sentiments like "Nobody likes to but I really like to cry," "I felt you in my legs before I ever met you," and "Maybe I would have been something you'd be good at"--lyrics that feel honest and add an emotional urgency and depth rarely heard on the radio. However, the biggest leap Tegan and Sara made on this record was not the lyrical content, but how the album itself was created. The switch to coproducing with indie superstar Christopher Walla (Decemberists, Death Cab for Cutie) is apparent, and part of what gives this record its distinctive and innovative touch. From the odd structure of "I Was Married" to the thumping electronica of "Are You Ten Years Ago," The Con reverberates with unabashed creativity, and it's a rare pleasure to hear it done so well. I would be surprised if another band this year made a better record--it's really that good. A special bonus for fans: don't shy away from the deluxe edition of this album--it includes a DVD with a feature-length intimate documentary on the making of the album, offering a lot of insight into their creative process. --Alan Wiley

Album Description

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!   March 4, 2010
Heidi Jean
As a longtime fan of Tegan and Sara, I had been intending to purchase this album for some time now, but I'm glad I bought it here because the order came fast and in perfect condition. I was familiar with many of the songs already, but a few I had never heard before. The tracks on this album feature a unique blend of adult alternative and indie rock sounds. Both Tegan and Sara write their own music, which is impressively coordinated on this album. This has become one of my favorite CD's and I was even more excited when I saw it came with the bonus DVD. I definitely recommend `The Con' to anybody who is already a fan of Tegan and Sara, as well as those unfamiliar, for you will soon become fans of this talented set of sisters.

5 out of 5 stars Renewed my faith in T&S   February 21, 2010
K. Zwick (NY USA)
After forgetting about T&S for several years ("If It Was You" turned me off), I noticed a poster that said they were playing in my area. I had never seen them live before, so I got a ticket. I loved it so much, I bought both "So Jealous" and "The Con" right then and there (I think I was the only one there who didn't own them already), and then went to see them the next day as well.
I know some people don't like this cd, but it's one of my favorites. I appreciate that there's some unique, solid songs here that don't involve lots of noise and screaming (how I see "If It Was You"). Nothing feels overproduced here. I find some of the songs eerie (in a good way). "Floorplan" gives me chills, and I can't explain why. But when I hear it once, I have to keep repeating it.

Other highlights for me are "Relief Next to Me," "The Con," and "Are You Ten Years Ago." But really, there isn't a weak track on the album. There very few cds I can listen through without skipping a track, and this is one of them.

If you've never heard anything by T&S, I think this would be a good place to start. Then go for "Under Feet Like Ours" or "This Business of Art," and throw "So Jealous" somewhere in there.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing as usual.   January 18, 2010
Grace Hernandez (Dallas, TX USA)
Tegan and Sara seem to get better with each new record. This album blew me away. These girls are nothing short of genius. There lyrics are incredible, the music is mind blowing and the vocals are much stronger than their "So Jealous" record. Every time I hear about Tegan and Sara working on a new album I get excited, because I know it's gonna be amazing. I encourage everyone to buy every single Tegan and Sara record. I promise you, you will not be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Just one thing   September 26, 2009

I have only one thing to say about this album, so this will be a short review. Tegan and Sara's albums have the very interesting property that each one is always markedly better than the last. Very, very few artists can say this, and it makes their whole body of work exceptional and interesting, but especially the latest album (which, as I write this, is The Con). Do not hesitate to buy this, I guarantee it will not disappoint you.
